I think mawmet is correct - maw is the mouth or gullet of a greedy person (hog) + met (touched) mawmet is a puppet (idol)

The explanation by Gangesboy is exaxctly how I arrived at my answer.

For 24 down the middle letter is 'O' and so cannot be slush. SPOSH is slush (American) - S (society) + POSH (wealthy).

I still wonder where my one error is!

I went with mawmet and sposh and was all correct on submission so ThePost - your mistake must be elsewhere...
