I am going to write an essay on "will criminal conviction ruin a people's whole life".

I am the negative side. So, do you guys know some famous people who have once changed as criminals (well, maybe they killed people or rob a bank), but they work very hard and eventually become a famous people after they have been released?

Not celebrities and political prisoners.

Thanks a whole lot!

Leadbelly.
Steve McQueen
David dickenson (fraud)

Lesley Grantham (manslaughter I think)

Stanley "Tookie" Williams was a co-founder of the "Crips" gang in the US. He was convicted of killing 4 people (He always denied this - although you would wouldn't you)

During his time on death row he became religious cand wrote anti-gang books to try to stop kids getting involved with gangs, and even earned several nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.

His work doubtlessly stoppped many kids getting into street gangs.

His appeal was refused by Arnold Schwarzenegger who of course is the Governor of California and he was executed by lethal injection in December last year.

Leslie Grantham was convicted of murder, not manslaughter. But anyway, I am confused by your question. You ask for "famous people" but "not celebrities". Can you clarify? And what is the difference between this question and your previous one?

Google Jimmy Boyle, he was a notorious Glasgow hardman convicted of murder. Turned his life around in prison and became an artist. There is a book on his life "A Sense of Freedom" and also a film I think.

I'm not sure if this is the sort of person you are looking for, good luck with the assignment.

Howard Marks springs immediately to mind.
I would not class him as a criminal but Nelson Mandela served 36yrs in prison beforge going on to the first black President of South Africa.

Why is Portsmouth such a horrible, dirty, poverty-stricken crime-ridden place?
