Surely only the minority of folks think drugs are harmless. And, while we are at it, everything is sucking California dry, not just ganja farms.

I keep seeing comments like 'alcohol does more damage', this was an aspect I had not thought of. My own view is that Cannabis is a serious problem now due to almost all of it being 'Skunk' that causes mental problems. The old 1960s / 70s 'weed' was harmless by comparison.

Surely the issue here is not dope, but the effects of large-scale cultivation of dope, which is not the same thing at all.

Is dope harmless? That is clearly a complex and on-going question.

Is the mass cultivation of dope in California harmless? It would appear not.

No - it just makes more headlines.

Alcohol is an ingrained aspect of our culture - as is its attendant abuse and crime stimulation.

Dope is still seen as 'them thar nasty drugs that them young folks do and get up to no good with ...' so they are a simpler target.

But bigger news coverage does not equate with bigger social harm - 33% of corpses in road deaths have excess alcohol in them - it will be a long time before drug abuse catches up to that sad statistic.

Dope...just plain dope, is, imo, pretty harmless.

Alcohol is more widespread but the results of cannabis taking is growing and more and more youngsters are suffering long term mental problems.
The OP did not ask which caused the lesser harm.

You're right there Methyl, that's why they use thermal imaging cameras to look for cannabis farms in residential areas.
