children learn language for social function and for reasoning and working things out, they do the latter by talking to themselves and playing games. I also found this site (www.ibs.derby.ac.uk/~steve/devcog2002/lecture8.html) when i did a search on google with all your criteria. hope it helps, just do more searches if you want more information.
