Don't want any grief from heron lovers but just to let you know, it didn't get all my fish after all. I reckon I've got about 20 left. Admittedly all the dull, dark ones but they are smarter than that bird! x

Yeah, the ******* had all my Dads Koi the summer before last.
We worked it out, over a period of 3 days, the heron ate a 500 meal!!!!!!! If you found a way to.......'deter' them, good on ya!
I'm glad Poglet that you have some of your fish left, our pond is fairly well off for them still but the local Heron gets them here and there, but then it's easier for them to hide as I don't do much with it and it's a natural pond so plenty of cover.Despite what you may think of me, I am glad that you didn't lose them all and I hope you've found a good counter measure:)
The herons must be desperately seeking food for their own chicks at the moment. Even saw one in our garden a couple of days ago attempting to raid our mico pond which is full of tadpoles (and no fish). If I'd known he was coming I would have opened a tin of sardines for him!

nox, our pond is a wildlife pond too and is surrounded by plants. we don't have any trouble in mid summer onwards as the plants practically cover the pond, including our humungous gunnera.

at the moment we have bamboo stix criss crossed round the pond and a piece of string right across with loads of dvds and cds which come free out of the paper hanging off it so hopefully that will be enough until we can afford the netting :)
