Recently made redundant - what can I claim? Who should I contact?

This may seem quite naive, but I've recently taken voluntary redundancy, so have a small amount in bank. I wanted to take 2-3 months off before looking for a new job, and now need to start. I have never claimed in past, but now feel that I should at least look at:

- benefits available;
- any chance of reduction of council tax?
- any other job seekers allowance

This might seem stupid, but I don't even know who to contact (am 40) and should I have done so before now and when the money started to run out? Any help appreciated.

Think they allow you to have up to 8000 in savings but i would double check on that it may have changed
