A 70 ft wooden tower, built in the form of an eastern temple, was set alight on Saturday night in Derry. It was designed by a man who has links with the hippyish Burning Man Festival in Nevada.
In a place where bonfires are beacons of bigotry could this attempt to bring people together be seen as an attempt at subverting the form?

I think that it is a start. There is something intoxicating about big bonfires, especially if they were selling burgers and stuff.

I think that is very moving Sandy and a perfect antidote to the bonfires of bigotry.

A beacon of unity and cleansing.

Thanks for sharing that.
I'd be interested in how much money it cost, and where this funding comes from.

Is this maker of world wide bonfires a millionaire ?

I'd guess Derry council paid. A year or so ago they were a stopping place for round the world yacht race.
Wonderful! Thanks Sandy :-)
Do you know, as I marvelled at the magic of it all - money never entered my head.

There is some information here that shows it is far more than just money up in smoke - workshops and the like for local people, even more bringing together.

Great stuff, sandy. It would be good if the sectarian bigotry went up in flames with it.

If w can only get that across to the dyed in the wool politicians in Stormont!
