I've known a few people that have gone on some expedition for charity, stuff like Everest Base Camp etc. Mostly people at work or distant accquaitances on FB.

How do they work? Usually its 'so and so needs to raise 5k to trek to base camp in aid of whatever charity' - is the 5k pure charitable donation or does their flight, accom etc come out of the money they are attempting to raise?

Friend of ours did trek across Great Wall of China, and approx. £1,700 went towards flight, accommodation expenses, then anything else went to the charity.
Others may choose to pay this aspect themselves, another friend of mine is doing a trek this year, but he is meeting his own expenses, and any money goes directly to the charity. I've done the New York marathon, but arranged my own flights and accommodation, so all money raised went directly to Sue Ryder
You should be able to find something online. Several charities are usually in a catalogue giving different events to choose from, each event has a different amount of money that you must be sponsored by, not such a lot of money gets to the "cause" once admin, guides etc has come out of it. Lots of students use these as a way to have a free holiday.
