Does it still exist? Granddaughter has chicken pox - AGAIN. I remember my Gran use to put calamine lotion on the spots, nice and soothing and doesn't work it's way off like ointment.

Yes, you can buy it in all chemists and even Tesco has its own brand version.
you're only supposed to get it once, unless your immune system is badly damaged by Aids or something. Are you sure that's the diagnosis?

Thanks hc, I shall pop down later. I remember once falling in a whole heap of nettles and my Gran covered me in calamine and I was all "cracky". It was nice and soothing though.

Jno. Yes that's what I thought too, and that you can get shingles in later life sometimes. She's been to the GP and she says its chicken pox! She's otherwise very healthy.
I was told to use Calamine cream as the lotion dries on the skin and makes the spots worse (and to put bicarbonate of soda in the kids' bath water).
Yes you can still buy it Horsey. In fact, I still have a bottle in my cabinet. Stop by any time to collect... xx
p.s. Happy Birthday xx

Thanks Jan;-)
When my daughter had chicken pox I used lavender oil on the spots, took away the itch, helped soothe her and she smelt lovely! It's a very effective remedy if you can't find Valentine lotion.
My sister and niece have both had chickenpox twice. Second was much milder though.

My son has had all his jabs but still got mumps.

My dad never had any childhood illnesses.
I had it as an adult and it was awful,, I remember using calamine cream which did not dry the skin out and worked well also when having a bath a few drops of mint or similar aromotherapy oil was added, it made the water seem really cold - it was wonderful as it cooled the skin down. Good luck it is an awful thing to catch but these things made life more comfortable.

Sherradk.......don't you mean "I was told NOT to....?"
I think Sherr meant that the cream is preferable to the lotion as it is not so drying on the skin and spots.
Mamy......of course.......my mistake.
be careful that your granddaughter does not scratch the spots in her sleep as it will leave scars, for my grandson we made mittens for the feet of some tights to be worn at night to stop this.
I remember when I had chicken pox as a child we lived near the sea and my mother used to take me down to the sea and dunk me in the sea water[ in winter] and bring a small bucket of sea water back and keep dabbing it on the spots as well as calamine lotion at night, luckily I did not have one scar.

Thanks for all your replies. Looking at the spots this afternoon, I'd say it definitely does appear to be chicken pox. She's not as "poorly" this time though.
Hi Horseshoes, could it be German Measles? (I had that several times as a child)
German measles.......red spots and blotches.
Chicken pox....white blebs which are discreet (fluid in them.)

German measles....flat
Chicken Pox....raised.
