On Whatsapp can you delete messages that you have sent to someone after you have sent them?

Delete them yes, but only from your inbox, they still receive them

The other option he's got is to say someone else sent it from his phone whilst he was out of the room to save any embarrassment ;o)

on your mobile. go to the page with the message on left click the bottom button select edit the tick the box next to each message the click the bin icon
(this will not delete the message already sent, just what on your mobile)
