Does anyone know of a website that has archives for the British singles and albums charts, or of a website that an be searched to provide chart listings for specific artists or groups?

Unfortunately due to copyright issues there is no website which provides full week-by-week chart archives, but you might find these sites useful: http://www.chartwatch.co.uk has a database of top ten hits with all the information you could possibly want on them, and http://www.everyhit.com lists peak positions for every UK hit single and album ever, and is searchable by artist, title and date.

Also try http://homepage.ntlworld.com/martin.newton7/top40/ which lists all top 40 hit singles with their peak positions, arranged by the date they entered the chart.

Or alternatively buy the Guiness book of hit singles, Guaranteed the only book you will need on this subject
