Toast ? OK not burnt but neither are onions they are just cooked to the point of nearly being burnt, but I get your point. Also Can anybody name another food which is called something different when its cooked i.e. Bread/Toast.
common denominator is sugar. everthing that tastes nicer brown (roast veggies, toast, toffee banoffee sauce) has a high sugar content, its the caramelisation that adds the flavour
i think its because you can only improve the tase of onions, they're horrible, and if burning changes the taste, then thats a good thing :-)
Your onions must be different than mine slimjim, because any burnt ones end up in the bin - much too bitter for our taste, a deep golden tinge yes, but burnt no!

Now....if meat happens to get a bit charred, then my lot fight for it! All a matter of taste, I suppose.

Not that my mum was a bad cook but she used to make sure everything was 'Done' so I prefer if food is a little bit black round the edges.
gilf. Things that change the name after being cooked ... Missionary - potroast.
burnt (or very well done) pork sausages - chew the skin off first - gorgeous
When I grill bacon, it has to be very well done, so the rind is crispy mmmmmmmmmmm!
I adore pork crackling well done. Sorry about this folks but why can't I post questions I have been trying on and off for well over a week now and its nothing rude or controversial.
whenever we have liver, cabbage, onions and gravy, my plate is put back in the oven for an extra 1/2 hour so that I have to virtually chisel the gravy from round the side of the plate
