I am replacing my PC and I want to wipe all content on the hard disk. How?

I assume you mean more thorough than just formatting?

There are programs that will do this for you.

you can use a program called Active Kill Disk which is free and it will remove the data from the hard drive .
Do you mean ALL the data (including Windows and all the programs?)

In that case it will be an empty hard disk.

Or do you mean leave Windows on it but clean all the rest of the free space?

If you mean clean EVERYTHING off the disk you cant of course do that from within Windows (it cant delete itself).

So you will need to make a CD or DVD or store the files on a USB stick and clean the disk that way.

And do you plan to sell it / give it away with an empty hard disk?

thanks to all respondents. apologies for delay in posting same. i think i would want to leave windows on the hd but wipe all else. and now another question ...

my new pc has arrived. it has windows pre-installed. i want to transferall the stuff on the old one to the newie. can this be done? if so, how?
