We stupidily picked a guy up last night on the way home from town....turned out he was ok and was left stranded from a stag do. We dropped him off at our local taxi rank and he got a cab home to Stirling from here. It could of turned out differently tho. What would you have done, would you have taken the risk?

Most likely no; I would not pick up strangers in my vehicle. I usually follow my instincts though.
I lived in London for a while in the early eighties but drove back up North on a regular basis. I once picked up a young man on the slip road of the M1 at Leeds. It turned out ok but I was not happy all the way as he was very odd. I would never do it again.
No.
errrrrrrrm,

I used to hitch hike years ago, mid teens, the thought horrifies me now

I never pick up hitch hikers.
Whats the gain against what can go wrong ?
If you pick up a male ...he could turn out to be a complete nutter.
If you pick up a female ...she could make up any story ....

Never ...never ....

Sounds like your mate is easy :-)
I once picked up a guy near Preston in teeming rain and took him to liverpool on the way he gave me his number and address ,we talked a lot then he asked me if he could borrow some money as he was short as I had his address
Of course I said no and that was that
A year or so after I was at the same roundabout and lo and behold a hitch hiker was there again
So I picked him up and it was the same guy ! He came out with the same story but half way through his "script" I leaned over and took my dictionary out of the glove box -where he had written his name and address- and said to him do you still live at ********* he froze asked me did he owe me money and never spoke again until I dropped him off
