I'm taking my 16 year old daughter to Brighton this w/e. I haven't been for years, where to shop these days? I used to love The Lanes but have heard they're not what they were.

We'd like to steer clear of the usual high st stores as we can get to these anytime

Also, anywhere really nice to lunch?

The best area of Brighton for shopping has to be North Laine. (Note the 'i' in Laine. It's a completely different area to The Lanes).

If you're travelling by train, just head towards the seafront and look for the signs, directing you off to your left, for North Laine.

If you're driving, all of the central car parks are within easy walking distance of North Laine. (Although, if you're paying for parking in Brighton you won't have much money left for shopping anyway!).

There are plenty of good eating places around North Laine but I can't recommend anything in particular because I never notice the names. (I just look for somewhere interesting and walk in).

There's a great description of North Laine, here:

Thanks Chris - this sounds right up our laine........lol

Hi Ali,

That's right, North Laine has the best shopping, small interesting boutiques that are nice to nose around.

Come out of the station and go down Trafalgar Street which leads down under the station and to the begining of North Laine. When you've worked your way through you can cross north Street and get to The Lanes for more interesting little shops. Keep going and you get down to the seafront where you will find restaurants, cafes and artist's studios under the arches. If it's nice you can have lunch outside one of the restarants.

If you are there on sunday morning there is a car boot sale out the back of the station which is goo for vintage clothing, antiques, junk, etc. etc. etc.

I also recommend North Laine, I go there once a year to do my shopping and to have lunch there, it's really 1970 there and smashing. You see all sorts and there are lots of different thing to buy.
