A South African friend of mine has gone on holiday to Slovakia. He has been held at the airport for not having a visa. I did not think you need a visa for spending less than 30 days in that country?

Can anyone spread light on this please?

there's supposed to be a website telling you this sort of thing - www.slovakiatourism.sk - but it seems to be inaccessible at the moment.
Whether or not someone requires a visa for entry to Slovakia depends upon their nationality. EU citizens obviously don't require a visa because they're free to visit, work or reside in any of the 25 member states of the EU, including Slovakia. There are other countries for which there are partial visa exemptions. For example, US passport holders may visit for up to 30 days without a visa. Holders of South African passports, however, will not be permitted to enter Slovakia without a visa.
