Very enjoyable, thanks, Dysart. I am just getting the scissors out to mutilate my grid (not as fiddly and worrying as I initially feared it might be!) Finding those ten letters missing from wordplay has been the biggest challenge, even when it became obvious what they were going to tell me. Thank you for a worthy challenge.

Muslin clue now much parsed. Many thanks. Out with the scissors
Neatly constructed, particularly in the matter of leaving real words after removals, which a lesser composer might have eschewed. This is not a theme to which I have previously paid much attention, but, as a good puzzle should, this has aroused my interest. Can anyone knowledgeable recommend a good book to start with? The Wikipedia entry on the first of the companions (4) gives an interesting selection from which to choose, but there are presumably others as well.
Sorry to be grumpy but would what remains in the bottom left corner be regarded as a 'word'?
Cruncher, only if you're from God's own county!
A wonderful puzzle to solve with terrific clues. I too was very impressed that removals left real words, quite a feat. I think the bottom corner fine because of one particular definition.

Cruncher, I think you have to read from top to bottom (there are no bars) so you get a fine word - buzz buzz.
Staurologist, the first of 4's books is THE classic work and is highly recommended. He has a fine style of writing, and was clearly a very intelligent man.
I agree with all the positive comments. No-one appears to have commented that publication this week marks the anniversary (albeit not a notable one).

Thanks to Dysart for a good Listener with plenty of thematic material.
Been on hols so missed a few puzzles. Good one to come back to. Given pseudonym and tendency to use Scots words (?), is Dysart a fellow Scot?
Catching up - all done in a couple of hours of early morning peace.

Thanks Dysart - very enjoyable.
Really enjoyable - fun struggling through this after a visit to London for other crosswords. Black out or leave blank? Bottom left no problem - read preamble carefully and the word is fine, at least that's how it stung me. 24Ac certainly gave me trouble as did 20 Down - the last two to give way. Very good all thew ay through - thanks Dysart
