cant give a price, but take smelling salts with you.

The actual parts needed are not expensive, but labour will be quite a lot .

If it's the 'head' gasket. Then I'm afraid it's a full stripdown of the engine. It takes time and probably will cost a couple of hundred in labour.

You might want to check the sump 'dipdtick'. If there's a milky white substance on the end.. That's water mixing with the oil (a good sign of gasket failure).

Also. Your radiator coolant level should be low. The reason for this should be corrected to prevent the gasket being 'burnt out' again. If you don't find any evidence of coolant being leaked to the sump.. Get a second opinion from another garage.

i have booked it in to another garage for them to give me a price and more details.

Just in case it is the 'cylinder head gasket'. Can I suggest (If you're driving to the other garage) that you keep a close check on the level in the coolant resivoir. It should be a, clearly marked plastic bottle close to the radiator.

Also. The 'engine temperature' gauge should begin to rise to 50% of its range after the engine's been running for a short while. The sensor for this gauge is situated in the coolant.. No coolant = No reading.

Good luck.. Would be interested in hearing the second opinion.. MM
