That is a very subjective question, I absolutely loathe the smell of Persil and favour Ariel, it is very much a matter of personal preference.

BTW, liquids are frequently associated with stinky washing machines.
Yes, very subjective...I don't like just-washed laundry to smell of ANYTHING.
As Eccles said, it is all a matter of personal preference, but do give your machine a good clean with Dr. Beckmann's deep-clean to clear away any sludge left by the use of liquids. The machine will then smell fresher leaving your laundry with a fresher smell.
I like the smell of Ariel too and since I stopped using softener (except on very rare occasions) my machine doesn't get smelly.

So, one tip is to avoid liquids, I imagined there would be less sludge whilst using liquids [as it's already dissolved] so I should go for a sweet smelling power instead?
The use of laundry liquids does NOT cause "sludge"....but some find that the machine can start to smell if only liquids are used (because liquids don't contain ingredients - like bleach- which kill smell-causing bacteria and moulds). This Which? link explains more and how to prevent it.

I have started using Dettol antibacterial laundry cleanser. I started because I have got dogs and they do disgusting things and their towels and beds get disgusting but I find it has a very pleasant fresh scent to it.
I use a fairly natural liquid and add a few drops of orange or lemon essence oil.
Best laundry smell is the "fresh from the line" smell when you bring them in from drying outside.
I use Daz ..lol .If you want a nice fresh smell dry it outside .
I'm lucky enough enough to live right near the sea and the washing always smells lovely and fresh after it's been out there in a ten force gale :)
I use a few drops of Body Shop white musk oil in my iron and that gives the washing a lovely fresh smell
Line-dried in the garden is the only answer. And don't use ghastly smelling fabric softeners - totally unnecessary on all counts.
