...or to have meekly accepted and bought a 'Teach yourself German' book?
This question is directed in particular to those who think Palestinians shouldn't resist Israeli might.

Dispel the notion that the land 'belongs' to Palestinians for a start. You've made it very clear where you're coming from.

do you think the land belongs to the millions of Russians, Europeans and Americans who make up the rapidly expanding Israeli population?
Svejk - doesn't it? If only on a 'we were here before you' basis?
sandy

relating the arguments of the israel apologists to UK in WW2, apparently the people to blame for all the deaths of British civilians in the Blitz were the British leadership and military who insisted on lobbing bombs at the German occupiers in France and the Low Countries.
mosaic, are you seriously suggesting that Palestinians were there before the Jews?
svejk

according to your logic I expect you to immediately hand over your house keys to any Celts currently living in the USA, Australia, South Africa, South America etc etc
There's no comparison, IMO, sandy - the religious differences and intolerance between the two wouldn't permit it.
that's my point. people keep harping back to 'palestine' which was an artificial construct that lasted 30 years.
^those who think Palestinians shouldn't resist Israeli might^ Hamas doesn't recognise the state of Israel. If they simply ignored its existence, that would be fine. Israel would then ignore them in turn, and there wouldn't be any need for 'Israeli might' and 'Palestinian resistance'. Instead, Hamas persists in lobbing rockets indiscriminately into Israel.
I wonder what would have happened if in 1948, Israel had been set up, say, here in Kent instead of by annexing a tract of land in the Middle East? I wouldn't be pleased to be hefted off my land today becase a new country was coming.
After any war resistance is likely to be the initial aim, a desperate need to turn the result around and reclaim that you consider yours. But there comes a time when the losing side has to accept defeat and no longer ruin any ability for they and their fellow citizens to have a decent life. It is knowing when that point has been reached that is the million dollar question. Balance is a difficult thing to reach.
/If they simply ignored its existence, that would be fine./

heathfield that's a very nice idea but overlooks the day to day reality that Israel bullies Gaza continuously with drones, check points and economic embargoes.

Israel makes damn sure that people in Gaza cannot 'ignore' Israel
except perhaps by going a long way away.
Its an unfortunate analogy, Sandy. For while the lefty's are bellicose freedom fighters (from a distance). They were, of course, first in the queue for German phrasebooks.
All you hear is "if it hadn't been for such and such we'd all be speaking German" but you've only got to look at the British aptitude for foreign languages to realise we would still just be shouting in English at our despairing Teutonic masters
