Directory Enquiries £1.59 + £1.99 minimum charge for 1 minute.
Do you ever use them , BT used to be free of charge then it was opened up to competition ,now it has risen to £3.58 for a 1 minute call.
Do you ever use them ,in this day when most numbers are available on the Internet is this a dying business a few years ago there were tens of companies fighting for the market .How many can you name NOW without looking them up ?

I can't name them because I never ever seek a number over the phone. I use the internet, even BT website gives you a certain number of free searches of the phone book a day.
I was going to call you but do not know your number, I'm too tight to use those private companies, as to their names , there are those two blokes that look like a throw back to the seventies and that's about all I can remember.
Whatever Directory Enquiries give you over the telephone, is available 'on-line'.

118 118 is a real con. Read what happened to Nelliebee :-

Hans.
Many moons ago I used to work on Directory Enquiries, in the days of paper directories. Back in the day you got a much better service, IMO, albeit harder work for the operator.

The answer is No - I'd never use them now.
I never use any of the Directory enquiry lines because of the cost. One way of getting round it is to phone another number who you guess may know the one you are looking for. I do this all the time now as (all my geograpical calls are free).

Another way is to go on "SAY NO TO 0870.COM" which almost without exception enables me to avoid paying for ANY call. ie 0844 numbers which so many companies use nowadays. I get everything else free by being with Talk Talk, even 0870 and 0808 numbers. That way I am not charged to hang on the phone while endless menus are gone through and even then don't know what to select.
I use them sometimes if I can't be bothered logging on, but not too often - too expensive.
I've occasionally used a directory enquiry service when I've needed a number urgently on my (non-internet connected) mobile phone.

118 390 gets you a number for 32p
118 226 costs 33p (but you can get two numbers for that)
118 848 costs 40p (for up to 3 numbers)
I haven't used DE for years - I look everything up on-line these days
