My brother has seen a Volkswagen Golf Mk3 for sale. The garage is closed this weekend so i cant call until Monday. It said the car was a Diesel and it was 4 speed. Did Volkswagen make 4 speed diesel cars? Because it was a diesel i would of thought it would be 5 speed.

Please help.

Yes, VW certainly did put 4 speed Diesel engines across their range of vehicles.

I do not understand your supposition that a Diesel should be more likely to have a 5 speed gearbox - if anything the reverse is true since Diesel engines produce more low end torque than the petrol equivalent and therefore do not need gear ratios so close together as those found in a 5 speed box.
