I've just filled out an application form for employment with a gas/electric meter reading company (Meter-U). I have just read their employment information and the company are expecting successful applicants to hand over 520, which would then be re-imbursed weekly over the first three months of employment. I would have to 'beg, borrow or steal' this amount of money! Does anyone else on AB have any experience or advice about this company? Many thanks in advance.

Meter-U have lost the Scottish Power contract to G4S. If you did the Scottish Power work they only paid you for work done from obtaining one read to the next, if 30 minutes lapsed after a read, say you had call backs (no access) and then travelled to another area, they deducted that time from your hours.

I have had a second hand report of what is happening. However working in BG East it does not impact on me at present. Can anyone say what is going on and what the new terms are?
i have also started to fill out a form but will now probably delete it as I did not realise it was a franchise & the only reason I noticed the job is because my benefits have been stopped & I was trolling thru the cyber wasteland of the jobcentre plus jobs computer device I am getting a fairly good collection of printouts that seem to have hidden things when u apply for them
I've heard through the grapevine that Siemens, who issue the work to Meter-U, will also be losing the the British Gas contract early next year to G4S. If this is true, wouldn't it be better to apply directly to G4S?
meter u ,,,,,,,shylocks & *** is what they feed you
always trying to grab as much cash off you as possible the goalposts are on wheels as they like to move them everyday.....as for the h&s guy the monkey is as good as a chocolate teapot....run for the hills is the best advice i can give they are only about when they want you to sign paperwork the rates change by the week never upwards beware of the no read clause its another way of them cutting your earnings expect no social life as you need to be working 7 days a week to earn a living wage they wanted me to rent a van off them for £475 a month when they are paying £220 a month and lie to you saying your getting it at cost....really......also they expect you to pay £1750 for a handheld unit which you never own as they have up graded they system....yet they get the hand unit free from thames water......all they bleat on about is the tax savings you can put down to your own vat reg company but you need to earn the cash 1st...!!!! the accounts fee is £66 a month plus van & public lib,& handheld unit insurance works out at £ 850 a month plus fuel plus they only give you the worst areas to try to make cash eg holiday homes in central london which are only used twice a year by ultra rich people so to sum up this company lies to its staff ?& lines its own pockets very fast then lose the contract leaving you high & very broke.....a job for watch dog to sink their teeth into in short your better off on the dole as slave labour is back under a new name which is METER-U
This job is an absolute con. They tell you half truths and you don't find out until you have been well and truly conned.

The pay is minimum wage. You use your own vehicle. They tell you that they pay a mileage allowance and that the inland revenue allow 45p/mile tax free. So you think that is what you are going to get for using your own vehicle to do the job.

I covered 7683 miles in 8 months and they paid me £1094.68 so thats an average of 14p per mile. They claim that the tax man will give the balance. They do not!! What they do is multiply your mileage by 45p then deduct the monies that meter u have given you and then they deduct the balance from your earnings. So basically you get 20% tax relief in my case on 2362.67 and so that is a cery long way of what Meter-U tell you.

So you earn minimum wage, you use your own car, your own telephone and believe me they want to hear from you daily. You have to "run Comms" daily at your own expense and you are not classed as working at this point. So you ARE working but for FREE and it's costing you money to do so.

You need to plan your schedule in your own time (unpaid) and this can take hours per day! You provide at your own expense batteries for torches. In my case average of £5 worth per week. Pens etc YOU buy.

This is not a job. This is you subsidising their business.

DO NOT DO IT!!! DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THEY TELL YOU. I HAVE TOLD YOU THE FACTS. FACTS THAT I HAVE LEARNED THE HARD WAY
