I am now awaiting surgery at Papworth for Pulmonary Hypertension, to say I am apprehensive is an understatement ! ( petrified ) Has anyone encounterd this situatation or know of anyone who has been operated on successfully, I am 71, and first taken ill on Jan 5th 2014, with blood clots on the lungs, after 6 months it now seems that this has progressed to more lung problems.
Any answers gratefully received,........ thank you.

I have had bypass surgery and yours will be similar. On the morning of operation you will be shaved and skin preped (painted) all over. You will be taken to the operating theatre and a drip set up in your hand and that is the last that you will know. The operation will take about 8 hours, your heart will be stopped for about for about half an hour maximum and your body...

You are almost certainly going to have a pulmonary endarterectomy and it is not that common so i will be surprised if any ABer has had personal experience.

The results are good, improving the quality of life and if i needed the procedure, then Papworth has the surgeons with the skill and experience.

Try this link:papworthhospital.nhs.uk Pulmonary endarterectomy service.

I haven't, nelliebee. But best of luck, i hope everything goes well for you xx

I have had bypass surgery and yours will be similar.
On the morning of operation you will be shaved and skin preped (painted) all over.
You will be taken to the operating theatre and a drip set up in your hand and that is the last that you will know.

The operation will take about 8 hours, your heart will be stopped for about for about half an hour maximum and your body will be cooled.

When you wake up, you will be in ICU (intensive care)
You will have minimal or NO pain....opening the chest is not painful.
There will be an IV drip into your neck with about 6 outlet valves for injections.
You will have a catheter in your bladder.
Drains into your chest leading into a bottle...a pump will make a noise,
Electrodes (probably 2) will run from the surface of your heart through the skin to the chest.

Again..I emphasis...PAIN will be minimal or absent.

Up next day sitting on edge of bed.......back to a ward in 48 hours and out of hospital within 2 weeks.

Any questions?
