The (highly respected) man who inspected the mine the day before did not see dangerous levels of water. Old mine workings are dangerous = mines are dangerous, they had just blown into an old working, anything could have happened between the man inspecting it (three times I believe) and the time that the miners went down. So sorry for the men who died. Could it have been avoided?

I know from personal experience that mining is a dangerous game and sadly accidents do happen. On 21st March 1973 a similar disaster occurred at the Lofthouse Colliery in Yorkshire where seven men lost their lives after water broke through from old old mine workings that weren't shown on the relevant plans.Off course some incidents are caused by negligence but others are just that accidents.
I worked in a mine, you cant always predict what is going to happen next. The mine I was working in was being renovated when all of a sudden the roof of the mine started collapsing and we ran for our lives and all got out, the roof was held up with regulation timbers but the roof material shifted and put unknown pressures on the supports and they gave way. Could never have been fore seen!
I have worked down a mine and I know water can suddenly flood an area with very little if any warning. In this case the geologist appointed as an expert witness said '' it was possible and probable, that the water was not there the day before when the mine was inspected'' I can't see how the verdict could be anything other than 'not guilty' in fact I am surprised that there even was a case for trial.
