In Casualty last week, a lady was told that she had an extremely rare pregnancy which involved the sperm penetrating a sterile egg, but the body prepares itself for childbirth, without there being a baby in the womb. What is the name for this kind of pregnancy? I know it could be called a phantom pregnancy, but this isn't the term that was used. Any ideas? Come on you Midwives!

iys not as rare as peope think. I had one of these last year, and the doctor/hospital only ever referred to it as a Phantom Pregnancy. its a very weird experiance - i was adament i was pregnant, wasted about 40 on pregnancy tests!!

Ellen in Casualty had a molar pregnancy which is a different thing to a phantom pregnancy.

years and years ago, i had a phantom pregnancy, i was so desperate for another baby i think my mind and body tricked itself into believing there was a pregnancy, i stopped having periods for five months, my stomach swelled and i had morning sickness and everything, yet i had 3 or 4 pregnancy tests and they were all negative. i couldnt understand what was happening at the time and it was very distressing. i had to face the facts that i wasnt going to have more children and began to relax and enjoy the family i already had, then it just happed, i had 2 babies on the trot, incredible.
