My whippet is now just one year old. I bought him when he was six and half months old and was told he was housetrained, however I suspect he was kept in a run outside for most of the time. My trouble is that he cannot go through the nights or sometimes even for about 3 hrs in the day without wetting in the house. I have tried shouting at him and showing him the puddle then immediately putting him outside. I have tried praising him when he does puddles outside. Any ideas anyone as we go away in the Summer and my mum said she will look after him if he is housetrained.

Have you tried a vet? has he had a Urinalysis?

Get that after you stop yelling at him or trying to show him some wet spot AFTER the fact, that doesn't work.

If you can, go to http://orangedog.forumup.com/index.php?mforum=orangedog

and look under "Behavior" and "potty training a dog"

Hi Burley, it can be a major problem but you could try this.

Put newspaper over most of the area where he spends the night. He should "go" on the paper, and each night, reduce the number of pieces of paper in the direction of the door out of the room towards outside. This may take some time but stick to it, I've seen it work several times. K

Get him used to sleeping in a crate and then leave him in it overnight. This will also help when he goes to your mums. Dogs will very rarely soil their beds.

Make sure you clean up anywhere he goes with a non-ammonia cleaner.
