Iinstead of using the VAC recommended (and expensive) detergent is there any other I can use? Would the ordinary stuff I use in the washing machine be suitable? The carpet it would be used on is 80% wool and a Vac machine would be used.

Which recommends Morning Fresh washing up liquid for carpets. You can buy it in Sainsburys.

We rented a rug doctor machine from Morrison's on Sunday, £20 for 24 hrs and £15 for the carpet shampoo which is enough for 4 rooms. It did a bloomin' marvelous job! For spot cleaning I use Dr Beckmann's carpet cleaner
