Audi A6 Quatro 2.5 D I all terrain manual. Stuck in low ratio. Help

Check the shift display on the dash.......is the gear number illuminated or the background?....this will tell you if the box is in limp mode or not.The problem may be a gate selector sensor or shift sensor.
