I've just been sat in my room (7pm) and heard what sounded like a scratching in the roof space above. I've noticed this morning a bird flying in and out of the guttering close to where I've heard the noise. Is it likely to be the birds moving about in the guttering? Can't get into the loft as were having renovations done and the access is blocked?

sounds like you've got a nest. if it's actually in the guttering it could cause a bit of a blockage but I wouldn't worry about it. just clear it out when birds have flown.

Could be squirrels..

It could well be birds that have found there way into the edge of the loft under the eaves, possibly to nest.

At least, I hope that it's the most likely explanation because only a couple of hours ago I was in my loft (for the first time in ages, sorting out a problem with an aerial lead) and realised, through the sounds coming from behind a pile of stored rubbish, that I was not alone!!!
what was it ?
It will be birds.

It was about 7pm this evening but there's been birds flying in an out all day from what family have said. The wall i heard it on has a gutter running along it and it's not been heard in any other rooms
It might be rats or squirrels. I had a squirrel nest in the roofspace at this time of year.
Hi sarah

Birds do go looking for water in gutters especially after its rained and do try and find place under the eaves to nest so what I would do is, if you cant yourself, get somone you know perhaps a friend or family member to go up and have a look as to what is near that area, maybe a nest and ask a roofer to seal it if there is a gap.

Also you could try putting up a gutter guard.......this allows all water to flow as normal but prevents birds from landing in the guttering and making scratching annoying noises.

Good luck and errrrrm have you seen Willard the movie? X

Thats what Buencheeky has up in his loft.....a big un.....sleep well Chris x
To echo mazie's possibility. Not so long ago my woman was hearing noises from either her loft or roof. We put it down to birds walking over the roof, but it turned out to be a squirrel that had built a nest having got in at the corner of the roof.

But for sure it may still be birds you have, if folk have seen them coming and going.

Thanks for all your answers. I think it's birds as it's been very quiet since and the chirping has stopped. We had a near a few years ago so think they've returned
Luck you Sarah. Please don't forget it is against the law to disturb a wild bird's nest. If you want to close the gap wait until the babies have fledged.
