I have a new job working for a huge organisation . I was sent a letter confirming my appointment (subject to health report -which was ok ).A couple of days after taking up the position I was sent some papers which included my contract of employment . The contrtact states that the rate of pay is �1000 LESS than that stated on the letter . Can they just change what they offered? Personell say the first letter was a mistake - and the contract is the real figure .I am miffed to say the least.Is there anyone I can ask about this?

You could take it to the manager of the department that you actually would be working for...you might want to go so far as expressing your disappointment that you would be unable to work for such a dynamic, innovative etcet person in such a market leading, etcet. company. Did you write accepting the post saying anything like "thank you for your letter of...."? and would the company have received it before you started work? Might be worth taking some legal advice, are you a member of a union or a professional body? Your local solicitors might give you a fixed fee interview to see what could be done. I would suggest you don't go to one of those no-win no fee ad type jobbies.
What amount was originally agreed at your interview? Did you sign and return the letter? If so and the amount on the letter is as agreed at interview then I would certainly dig my heels in and go to your manager who can, I imagine, certainly overrule HR. If not and you knew the letter was a mistake then morally I suppose you will be in more difficulties.
Your employers letter plus you starting the job is a sound contract for you to be paid at the rate in the letter. If they do not now wish to pay the rate in the letter they must pay you off and compensate you appropriately. If they do not do thia voluntarily, you must write to them saying that they are in breach of contract and giving 7 days to rectify failing which you will leave immediately and claim compensation. Keep your compensation claim to just less than �5000 so that it will be heard in a Small Claims Court and you will not be at risk for their costs. You will win.

Thanks all .I havent signed anything at all yet . I got in touch with Hr and they sent me a letter saying -"oops we put the wrong amount on the letter ,hope this clears it up".I want to take it further but I need the job. The organisation of the workplace is abismal and so I dont actually see my manager as they didnt set enough people to fulfill the contracted hours and so one of the managers is having to do work in my dept.This means they cant sort out my problems.Sixuth the 5th -I would so love to take them to court - but in the end I would be out of a job - probably for good at my age. I just want to be able to stand up for my rights -and still keep my job.
Understood. Then do absolutely nothing. Do not reply to their "we have made a mistake letter". If you settle down happily you will forget all about it. If things go wrong you will be able to use their "mistake" letter against them in the context of circumstances at the time.
