If they are in rows of five then there are four (plus one more) in each row.
I agree, there seems to be a conflict in the question 5 rows - 4 in each row?
I can get three rows of four out of nine tulips, any advance ?( this is amazing for me I am usually useless at this stuf!!)
I now have 4 rows with 10 tulips......by it doesnt look very tidy.....

oh my God..I've bloody well gone and done it.....yipeee...its a strange star shaped thingy.....that way you can have 5 rows, each with four bulbs in it....
its a star with an upside down pentagon in the middle....it is honest.....a five pointed star.....
congrats nuova, I got to half a pentagonic star and you beat me to it!!
Forgive my stupidity, but i can still only get 3 rows of 4!
I've been trying to copy what nuova suggested...I hope this comes out ok (if it doesn't try Arial or Courier New fonts).

Number each tulip 1 to 10 starting at the top and going from left to right. Now join:
' 1-2-5-8,
' 1-3-6-9,
' 3-4-5-7,
' 2-4-6-10,
' 7-8-9-10.
Thank you Squirrel, now I get it. My excuse is I still have 'porridge brain' from having the children (and no, they are not in their 20's)!!!
Many thanks for that Squirrel. So the question should have been "plant 10 tulips in 5 rows so that you get 5 rows of 4". I wonder if ptpeters77 has bothered to look at any of the answers.
Squirrel, I award you 3 *** anyway.....
