My mother in law is 67 and had wonderful long straight silvrgrey hair down to her waist.
I have a dear friend who is 70 ..she has hair down to her waist and wears it in a chignon which is very becoming in a lady of her age. I also have friend who is the same age as me ,58 and she still has the lovely long hair she had at school. I suppose you would class 58 as old !!
Elderly friends and relatives report that arthritis in their hands and fingers make care of short hair less painful...
plus, if they all had long hair there wouldnt be enough purple rinse to dye it all....
i will never, ever, ever have short hair. ever.
Agreed joko! It's taken me years to get back my long hair and I ain't giving it up now! Why do they always have perms too gingerflaps?
As you get older, unless you are very lucky and have very thick hair, your hair gets thinner. Also older ladies probably find it easier to manage short hair, and they say as a lady gets older, younger hair takes years off her age ... put your long hair up, and see !! I have never been able to grow my hair very long , it is too fine, so good luck to you !!
gingerflaps, it could be be because we have such busy exciting lives that we can't be bothered with long hair. Also, it might get tangled in our bicycle wheels!!!

Is it the same reason that a lot of oler people drive Rovers? Because that was really cool in their day so they just keep it going cos they like it?

I would tend to agree with you though, gonna try and keep mine long. Its pretty thick so fingers crossed!

As judiewudie has already mentioned, women's hair gets thinner as they grow older and can begin to look straggly rather than maintaining the thick luxuriance of youth.

Our faces also lose the softness of youth and longer hair can emphasise the hardening and bonier look of our features.

My seven year old daughter also believes old women with long hair look like witches and keep toads in their pockets.

Short hair or hair worn up can be much more flattering to older faces. Unfortunately, older faces usually tend to 'droop' (hence face lifts) long hair can emphasise this. Shorter, funkier hair that 'lifts' the face can make a face look so much younger.

I have short hair now but like to keep it fashionable . Long grey hair worn loose can look very, very ageing.

I intend to keep short funky hair until a great age (if I make it). Nothing worse than a curly grey perm!!

Have you ever seen a lady from the back with long hair and a decent figure, only to see her front and an older wrinkled face - no way. Shorter hair on an older face is far more flattering.
Women with hair longer than shoulder legnth have to be fortunate to have thick hair otherwise if its thinning and long it looks awful, and its so ageing, denise s - you made me laugh,,, ive seen a few of those.. better shorter and a "funky cut" as gessoo says
I totally agree with Denise S. I think long hair on an older woman is totally unflattering.
There's nothing worse than long grey hair on an older lady, unless it's in an up-do, even dyeing it makes no difference. I have a friend with long hair who says she'll never cut it. We'll see!
fideldyfee - I'm 34 and I drive a Rover.

And I also intend to keep my hair long (its long, thick, natural blonde now) right into my old grey age! Its probably got some grey in now but that is the advantage with being blonde - you can't see it!!

As an oldie with long hair, drawn back into a ponytail. I take exception to the remarks about older women with long hair and decent figures.

Just wait until you are old, then remember what you said.

I thought that the reason many women have their hair cut shorter as they get older was to avoid attracting men. Just as soft long flowing hair can be very attractive ( even with a bit of grey) so a short agressive, military-style haircut is likely to repel all but the most desperate of guys. Might attract a few lesbians, though ?
