I have a desktop PC and a laptop,I know the latter is wireless but what about the PC?
At the moment it had an Ethernet cable running from my Virgin topbox..But can it work without.

I have been thinking of changing my broadband to BT and she said that it will work just from their router/hub,but this made me wonder if the PC has to be wireless enabled for it to do this.(I will not be moving to them after all )

Soooo...I have been looking for options in case it isn`t...Found Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation

.I want to move my tv etc to the other side of the room ,so cables have to be relocated, have got an Virgin engineer coming out at end of month so will be able to ask him regards to my PC.the person I spoke to at Virgin said that the new connections will be much simplier than my present ones, which are ridiculous...so many cables and messy.

This is where I think Buenchico will come in and advise me.

Kloofnek - try this but it's saying the site is under maintenance at the minute....

Kloofnek - we're crossing our posts here.

Yes, you have one near your hub and one near the other device you want to network. The system effectively uses the mains ring circuit in your house as an ethernet cable, already there and out of sight, and wherever you want to connect a device to the ethernet you simply plug an adapter into a nearby mains outlet and connect it to your device with a short ethernet cable.
Can I just ask again, as I am about to be in the same position.

Long before I had a computer, I ran a cable from the i/c wall socket downstairs up to the floor above, and put another phone there. Later I sited my PC there, and used dial-up to contact the web. When I changed over from dial-up to broadband, BT sent me a router, which I plugged into the line upstairs. My PC doesn't have a wifi card so I plugged the router directly into the back of the PC. Everything works OK.

But I am just about to upgrade to a faster service with BT, as they have provided cable to the cabinet. But they need to replace the socket on my wall as well as provide me with a new router. It could be that this new router will have to stay downstairs, and I won't be able to plug an ethernet cable into the PC any longer, unless I re-site the PC downstairs, which I don't want to do.

Forgive me if I am sounding a bit thick here but if I plug this little Edimax thingy, in the link in the OP above, into a USB socket of my PC, it will find the router downstairs and I can use the internet as before, wirelessly this time ? This little jobby from Amazon is terribly inexpensive and it does seem a very cheap and easy way to convert my PC to use wifi, instead of an ethernet cable !

Also... does anyone know why BT have to provide me with a new wall socket ? Why can't they just send me a new router. I don't want BT sport, so have no need to connect the new socket to my telly. In fact, why do I need a new router at all ? Why can't I just use my existing router, and get the faster speeds that way ?
Mickey - Yes, the Edimax yhingy will allow you to connect wirelessly to your new hub downstairs. This is probably the cheapest way to do it.
If you have any concerns about having a wireless connection, then the thingies from 7dayshop will enable you to do that - plug one into the mains near to your router, another near your PC, use the ethernet cable which used to run from your PC to the router to connect your PC at one end and a similar cable to connect your to your router. More expensive but I feel safer doing internet banking via cable than wifi.
Are you going fibre broadband? Is that the faster service from BT? This could be the reason for the new BT master socket (and no more microfilters on all your telephones).
bhg481...thanks for your help. The power socket sounds good as well. In answer to your last question, its only fibre-to-the-cabinet, so I will still have my aluminum tail into the house.

I have to confess at this point in the proceedings that I was a BT Engineer from age 16 to 41 ! But I left before all this internet thing started.

At present I am getting close to 11.73 Mb/s, so I haven't actually decided whether to upgrade or not. My present speed is quite fast enough. I don't download big files, or films, and I certainly don't want bl00dy BT Sport !
I don't even have SKY, as I find all those awful TV channels to be mostly rubbish. Actually I did try SKY Plus for 2 years, found all the channels to be crap and stopped paying them anything. But I kept the box and the dish, so I get some sort of Freeview from Sky, without paying them anything. The I Player seems to have outmoded the Plus bit, so I am quite contented, TV-wise.

Do you know why BT can't just send me a new router, or why I need a new router in the first place ?

Hi mikey...I am thinking the 7dayshop gadget will be safer ,although not sure if I can set it up...do you think the Virgin engineer will do it up for me when he relocates my tele etc.
bgh...will I need to buy the cables to go with the gadget(7dayshop one)
Question Author
I'm sure that if you ask the engineer nicely and offer to cross his ( or her ! ) palm with silver, you will get it done OK.

mmmm...good idea!!!
Still not sure how they work,so,I have to have two of them, one by the PC and one by the router/hub.correct.
Have to buy two of them and ,am presuming ,the two cables to go with them,
When are you having your done...mine is on 29th Jan...£49.99 for relocating.Am changing my lounge around,so everything has to be moved to other side of the room.Apparently,so they tell me,the set up will be simplier than it is now which is soooo messy!!! got Ethernet from my Tivo box running to the other room to PC ,through the wall..,a little modem coming from another cable which is clamped with a horrid metal thing to the skirting board which has not a cm of leeway, then a lead fro that to the router...and...then...all the mains cables.!!!!
So hope to get rid of a few with this NEW way they say it will be....fingers crossed!!!
Kloofnek - no setting up necessary with the 7dayshop gizmo, just plug and play. Comes with one cable and, of course, you already have the other one connecting your computer to the current router. The link you sent is fine, Amazon also do them too, but only buy the length you need. You can also buy ethernet adapters from Amazon - I only mentioned 7dayshop because theirs were cheapest when I got mine a year ago.
Just put in an order for BT Infinity. I will get up to 38 mega pixies and I will actually be paying £1 less each month than I am now !

bhg...what length cable comes with the 7dayshop gadget and I assume there are two ,one for each?
I can't remember what length of cable I got - I have ethernet cables from other sources and used used ones of the appropriate length when I set my system up. I'm guessing they're about 1.5 metres.
I bought 3 adapters - a pair + 1 extra and I got 1 cable for each adapter.
If you look at
http://www.7dayshop.com/7dayshop-network-500mbps-mini-homeplug-powerline-ethernet-network-adapter-twin-pack
you can see they sell various lengths of drop cables if the supplied ones are too short. I've always found their "contact" button at the top of their page helpful.

Thank You bhg.

I received my gadget from 7dayshop today.(twin pack),Now,I know one goes by my desktop PC and the other into my router/hub which is with my Virgin Broadband.Do I have to do the latter, when, surely, the Vrouter sends the signal or whatever to the gadget by the desktop PC.
Also it says one can set up with a password to make it more secure,(gives the link)I have a password with my Vrouter,so would I need two or will my Virgin one be enough???
bhg481,are you there to answer this for me?
Kloof, did you ever check that your desktop is already wifi enabled?
