By being a good role model, blackcat.
Upon meeting my daughter many of my colleagues told me what marvellous manners she had..............they seemed surprised :-(
All you can do is give them guidance and teach them your values. Beyond that I don't think personalities are inherited but based more on their unique gene mix.
just do as much as you can. unfortunately friends have alot of influence on children in the teenage years.
I think it is by being a good role model. My children are very polite (but that's from being 'taught' to be - we are polite to them (please and thank you's) so they know that nice manners are important. A lot of it comes down to the nature of the child, mine are very kind and thoughtful of others (might be because there are so many of them). This is a photo of thing 2 comforting a friend who didn't want to stay at the party without his mum - http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=10xtt0y&s=8#.UySw7ssgGSM

No one asked him to, he just noticed his friend was sad.
I agree. In most cases a stable home and a good example is what is required. Sherrard, that's a lovely picture.
Set a good routine from the start and let them know what is expected of them. Ie behaving when you are out with them. Friends are an influence and I used to hate it when they brought friends home that did not behave. They only usually came once. I would like to think that my children (now adults) have good manners. I know that they would not be rude to people even if provoked and they would not swear at someone either. I don't think I was a particularly strict parent but firm.
I think its important though to differ between good manners and behaviour and personality. All three of us were brought up the same so far as good manners and consideration of others but we all have different personalities.
