The Israelites were having a moan at Moses because in the desert there was no figs, grain or water, and they thought that their cattle and themselves were going to die.

God then told Moses (and Aaron) to gather everyone together, take his staff, strike a rock, and water would come pouring out - enough to fill the people and the animals.

This indeed happened - but Moses big mistake was to take the glory for himself - and not to give God the honour for this miracle!! God then told him he would be allowed to see Caanan (The Promised Land), but not enter it - that honour would go to Joshua.

That's it - before he died Moses was shown the land from Mount Nebo with the promise that it would go to his descendants, but he would never cross it.

As you can tell this is a potted version - hope it makes sense. :-)

Makes sense to me! Thanks millions :)
I'm sure Cetti has got this slightly wrong. Remembering from my GCE days at school, God told Moses to go to a certain rock and talk to and water would come pouring out.

However, because he was so cheesed off with the Israelites moaning on at him he struck the rock with his staff in temper.

Everything else Cetti says is right ie Moses seeing The Promised Land etc.

Sorry for being pedantic but this is exactly what my RE teacher told our class all those years ago!

It is not 'slightly wrong' gazza. If I had used the whole of Numbers 20 v 1-12 ( the Bible was my source) the answer would not have fitted the page, which is why I said 'this is a potted version'.
Sorry Cetti, but it is slightly wrong.

As I said, God told Moses to speak to the rock in front of the people. But as Moses struck the rock instead God punished him for not obeying Him exactly which would have brought glory upon Him in front of the people, ie Moses telling the rock to pour forth water in the name of The Lord etc. etc.

Once again, sorry for being pedantic, but this is exactly what my RE teacher told us all those years ago and mummyof3 stated that her son had been asked to find the answer, I suppose it could be RE coursework or something so I'm just trying to clear it up.

I think it was because he forgot to take the tablets.
