I have been offered a 1 year old I phone 4 by a friend that is at the end of it's contract at a very cheap price. The phone is at present on a contract with Orange and I would like to know whether it will be possible to change this to O 2 and use my present "Pay as you go " Sim card.

As a pensioner I am a bit naive about what is possible on mobile phones, and any help will be appreciated.

I would have thought so but you'd need to take it to be 'unlocked' from Orange. Unlocking handsets are not usually a problem nor too expensive but from experience know sometimes stores don't yet know the info for newer handsets. May be prudent to check iPhone 4 is presently unlockable.
If the phone is on a contract with orange, I understand that your friend (legal owner) will have to make an official request to Orange and there will be a fee involved of approx £20.00
