I would seriously consider uPVC as an alternative to timber, Traci. Available in some colours, they don't look half so bad as uPVC products used to.

I always paint uPVC for a more natural look. No warping, rotting etc :o)

Have a look here for a start............

If you check out their installer map, you'll see they have someone in Buroughbridge Road, York.

Thanks builder, but aren't the uPVC ones quite flimsy?
That's what you have to watch for, Traci. The better ones are certainly as rigid as timber.
With tall louvres, go for ones with a horizontal central rail. It gives them a lot more strength. Alternatively, consider solid ones. They will be stronger again.

We all like proper timber, but don't forget maintenance. As with windows, once you've let them go, they'll rot easily. uPVC doesn't suffer from that, but it's a matter personal choice.

The ones we have at the moment have been there for about thirty years, so haven't done too bad really, I might take a drive out and actually look at them, can't tell anything from a picture on a screen, thank you for taking the time to answer.
