Once they are through puppyhood, most dogs don't go around eating plants though. You do have to be quite careful about using things that make plants attractive to dogs. For instance I can't use the organic seaweed fertilisers on my garden because to the dogs they smell delicious.
I would also suggest that its a bit of a stretch to say "must have eaten a plant" There are other things in a garden that can cause that particular upset, including cross infection from other mamamals.

I think that on the balance of probability it was probably a plant.

Neither of my dogs ate "odd" things - which was good.
