I have a French laptop and there is no pond sign. I think there is some combination of keys to get it but don't know what this is. Anyone any ideas?

Sorry, should be pound sign (money)
Here's a keyboard combination table including the £ sign http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms892155.aspx
Try ALT 0163 John

Hold ALT key while typing 0163 on the numeric keypad
try 'alt' 156 for £
Try ALT 1 5 6
hold Alt and press 0163 on numeric pad

Boxtops there is no pound sign in the characters column
It's on row 1b, between 19 and 20 in the first column

Boxtops found it on the list but can't get it up, perhaps this is not French but a US laptop
On your keyboard, do the 7, 8 and 9 keys have on them those digits not only as big characters but also as small characters in a different, darker colour, probably on the front of the key? If so then there will be a key combination that makes part of your keyboard behave as a numeric keypad.
