I'm looking for a new TV. I have seen the High Definition ones in Curry's but the salesperson tried to convince me to buy a rear projection one. I think the RP teles are big and cumbersome and you need to sit quite a distance from them. Am I right to go for HD given that the picture and sound are better?

HD by a long way. Perhaps Currys are trying to get rid of the RPs because no one will buy them.

They are larger and more cumbersome, purely do to the technology. HD tecnology will be present in LCD and (I think )Plasma TVs, TV's are already being built now with the capability of displaying Hi Def Pics (Which will be transmitted later on this year). Whoever told you the sound was better might not be entirely correct.

You are never, at least not in the near future, going to get a picture as good as on your Cathay Ray Tube TV due to the limitations of technology. Also you can't put and RP on the wall. He may be pushing you to get an RP to get rid of stock, you never know..... ... but then if you shop in Currys, that is what you get. Try John Lewis, awesome aftersales service.

You will definitely be wanting a HD tv in the near future.

If you don't really need a new tv just yet - wait a while. The costs of flat screen with HD are coming down rapidly.

When you do buy, make sure it is HD ready.

Thanks guys. I was thinking the same about them wanting to ditch the 'old' stuff. It was obvious when I saw banks of slimline HD ready tellys and a few lonely gigantic rear projection ones. You've helped me to decide. HD it will be. My current 32 incher is still in excellent nick and I think it's fair to note that a good idea is to have a TV set on the wall-mid hight sounds right.
cheers.
Sian.

rp tv's can be hd ready!

in fact sagem make one that is in stuff magazines top 3 they rate it that highly.

The viewing angle on our R.P. tv left a lot to be desired. New plasma significantly better. Check out the clarity of blue and black tones on new choice ( take a dvd of termiator three or similar ) as there are big differences in tonal quality from brand to brand.
