Where does Sloppy Joes come from?

My comfy, cosy, dossing T-Shirts are my beloved Cantona one .my Che one and my ancient ragged Ramones one and my equally ancient Hothouse Flower one which we all fight over and I think my daughter has knicked when she moved!

Who wears their Clash T-Shirt with their joggers and there in their fifties (good on ya BTW) ?

Just a bit of fun and maybe a memory jogger for some of us!!!

'Sloppy' in reference to garments, has meant loose-fitting since the early 1800s. It was not until the 1940s, however, that the first reference to a 'Sloppy Joe' appeared in America. Originally, it was a loose sweater or cardigan, but later came to mean a T-shirt, too.

'Hothouse Flowers', .....ah, yes, obscure Scottish group, bit of a one hit wonder, ugly lead singer.

That one sounds like it should have been donated to a charitable institution years ago (perhaps it has!).

Cantona,....you suprise me, (yes, it is actually possible!), a good choice indeed.

The image of a fifty (oh how you girls lie about your age!) something 'Dris' in a 't-shirt' and 'joggers', makes me think of Rab C. Nesbit.

Say it aint so DG!

Hothouse Flowers are Irish - not often you're right but you're wrong and are brilliant and certainly not one hit wonders.Seen them live twice - I preferred the lead guitarist incidentally.

I am not in my fifties and dont wear joggers - I was just using that as an example. (That'll be the next thing - I can just see it coming - 50 something drunk who wears joggers and answers to Mary Doll !!)

BTW - just an addendum my daughter served Joe Strummer in a restaurant where we live (his wives family live here) and she got a brilliant personalised autograph for me - I was so chuffed. He died 6 days later.

Forgot - I am in love with Eric haw-hee-haw (do you like my french!)

You were so chuffed he died six days later?

(Was the food that bad?).

A little uncharitable I think, but then I've come to expect that.

(That'll be 1 star for me, and three for mary doll, I think).

Hi Drisgirl. Sloppy Joes were originally a sloppy mince mix served over hamburger buns. They are strangely yummy, so I've enclosed a recipe.

Sadly, I haven't a clue when they became associated with baggy T shirts and sartorial inelegance.
