I am about to insall a PCI soundcard into a ASRock K8Upgrade-VM800, do I need to connect the DVDplayer by cable to the soundcard to enable me to play music CD's directly through the speakers from the DVD? or as suggested by a workmate no need to bother these days because the soundcard takes care of it all. Thanks for advise offered.

you can but it will make little difference as mostly music cds are digitaly read and that is dealt by the saound card rather than the cd drive
