I believe it was 'The Fellowship of the Ring' last year with 13 nominations. Haven't caught the ones for this year so it could well have been surpassed.
The Oscars don't hold the same attraction for me that they used to. There are so many categories now, it is a wonder there is not one for best tea-maker.
Now this may sound like I've made it up, Wildwood, but...
There are 2 films with 14 nominations. The first was the superb "All About Eve" (1950) winning 5 and the other being the dire "Titanic" winning about 8 too many. Incidently the film to have the most nominations without winning a single statuette was Spielberg's "The Color Purple" with 12 nominations.
it is and i only know because i read it today is ben hur and some alfull film about some boat sinking with leo whats hes face and kate thingy in it LOL
titanic holds the record with 14 nominations of which they won 11. titanic also holds the record for most oscars (11) along with ben hur and return of the king

Leg of Lamb got it right (nice name by the way!) - the two to tie are quite a shocking combination. I am totally biased because I think All About Eve is possibly the greatest film ever made, but yes, it did scoop 14 nominations. Titanic, (quite unbelievably) similarly managed 14, - and I believe won significantly more than its incomparable former.

I do feel quite confident that the Oscars have got it 'right' on numerous occasions. But the above does not make for good reading, however you may wish to view it.

Additionally to responding to the question, does anyone know how many categories there are in the Oscars awards - i.e. how many can a film conceivably be voted/awarded for?
