Hi I was just wondering why hallucinogens have been Mage illegal when we see daily deaths by alcohol? the reason I ask is because I am an alcoholic and I tried DMT 3 weeks ago and I have not touched alcohol since. I feel more loving to my family and I am now wanting to change the world for the better. If I never tried it my future would be bleak.

Of course your life is bleak. Your an alcoholic, for gawd's sake ! None of us see it, but we always drive our family away (remember I have been there, but every alcoholic who ever gets better will say the same; I have met hundreds). They have not got the same person with them any more; they have a stranger in their midst, and not a pleasant or predictable or reliable one. At best they have got the bottle talking to them. For a brief period you were somebody else again, thanks to another drug, but it can't last and , if it did, the perception would be all your own; they've have swopped one person they don't know for another they don't know for that , possibly hallucinatory, phase.

But at least you recognise and use the word that we deny for years; alcoholic.

The worst thing about being an alcoholic is that you are strangely lonely in that you are convinced that nobody else is or has been like you. Some of us say we have friends; we don't. What we have is drinking companions; our real friends have slunk away, and we're happier with people who drink. Deny that if you will, but try to think how many people among your friends would be happy if you refused to drink, or how happy you'd be if they didn't. Can you imagine convivial company without alcohol?

It's a one way journey. Either you come to a point where you hit 'the brick wall' and get proper help as a result, or you get steadily worse and there is only one other outcome.

If you can try to find the biggest meeting you can of Alcoholics Anonymous. They do hold open meetings where you don't have to say or even accept that you are alcoholic, but frankly, I'd go to any big meeting, since nobody ever calls on you to speak; people have to put themselves forward, by blurting out something or indicating they wish to speak, they don't get to say anything unless they wish. Big meetings are best. Avoid meetings labelled Big Book meetings; they are for nerdy types, all experienced in recovery, who like to discuss stories in a book written by one of the founders. What a daft idea. They are beyond my understanding and I've been dry for 13 years !!

Failing that any meeting will do. If you don't like it; and I have found one or two dire ones; go to one somewhere else until you find one that suits. But keep going. And if you are an atheist, like me, don't worry. You leave God out of it; they talk of a higher power instead, but only very rarely does that get mentioned nowadays; society has changed a lot, and AA accepts that. But the fundamentals still work and have saved hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people, probably millions.
