Are these an example of the very valuable skills that we hear so much about, all of which which some immigrants are bringing to this country?

for every hard working migrant there will be x amount of criminals and hanger-onners coming over. The Government know this but see it as collateral damage in the larger scheme of things in our ridiculous quest to attempt a harmonious cultural boiling pot.

No-one ever sees the bigger picture. Joanna Lumley did alot for Gurkhas right to remain. Most of the uk got behind it, seeing the endearing image of the Nepalese crawling across the Himalayas on their hands and knees just to serve 'Queen and Country'. The bigger picture is there is now a generation of young Nepalese, uninterested of joining the armed forces and unable to identify with the UK as part of their culture; us and them again.
Snafu

Does the UK have a substantial second generation or rather, (given the ages of the soldiers in question) third generation of Nepalese kids?

And instead of joining the armed forces, what careers are they choosing?

What social issues have you observed in the Nepalese communities of the UK?

Chill out, it was just a sarcastic dig at all those who instantly jump in with the usual pro immigration defence each and every time mass immigration problems are debated.

/// To be fair,AoG, a lot of them steal copper cable from beside railway lines. That must be quite hard work.///

Yes but not so skilled.

/// Even if Romania is an EU country (and I'm not sure whether they are yet), ///

Have been since 2017, it was just that while most EU countries put a block on them working in their countries until 2014, Britain's Labour government at the time put no such restrictions on them, that's why they all flooded into the UK.

/// While the minimum wage in the UK is £6.19 per hour, in Bulgaria it is just 73p. Romania is not much better at 79p. ///

/// Meanwhile, the average weekly wage in Bulgaria is £63.50 and £86 in Romania. ///

/// The only state benefit available in either country is child benefit, which is £3.50 per child per week in Bulgaria and £3.69 in Romania. In Britain, a single person can claim up to £71 a week in jobseekers’ allowance and a couple can claim £111. Housing benefit varies depending on local authorities. Child benefit adds another £20.30 a week for the first child and £13.40 for each one after that. ///

Is it any wonder they choose to come here?

More than a hundred years ago it was the Jews who were being libeled as Fagins by none other than Dickens. I'm sure these East Europeans can't be as black as they're painted by the Mail.
Labour would stop them coming here. Remarkably, I've just watched Yvette Cooper (bbc1, Sunday Politics) criticising the government for not doing enough to stop them.
Now that Labour have re-branded themselves as the 'tough on immigration' party surely its time for apologies from the pro-immigration lobby on this site.

/Now that Labour have re-branded themselves as the 'tough on immigration' party surely its time for apologies from the pro-immigration lobby on this site/

None of the main parties have become 'anti immigration'

Not labour. Not conservative. Not even a minority party like UKIP.

All of them are proposing various levels of Control

And I doubt anyone on AB has ever claimed that was a bad thing.
Oh, so it was a sarcastic dig.

If that's the level of debate you're shooting for, perhaps you could answer this...

If, as you say in your post of 11:07, Romania has been part of the EU 'since 2017, can you please explain what method of time travel they have been using to entertain UK?

Also - why do you draw attention to the minimum wage in the UK, when the debate is about Romanian ATM fraud.

As far as I know, fraudsters don't earn a minimum wage.

Or are you opening the debate to reference all Romanians - honest hard working ones on minimum wages, those who claim benefits and finally - the crooks.

Sorry to throw so many questions at you, but I would prefer to know what's actually being debated, because it desnt seem static at the moment.

"surely its time for apologies from the pro-immigration lobby on this site"

That's conceptually bizarre.

Just think how odd that would be. It's almost like saying "My views are correct, and you should say 'sorry' to me for disagreeing".

Am I reading that right?

That's really...'out there'.

Especially because there isn't a pro and anti faction on AB...there are various shades in between. There are those who support open economic migration with the EU, those who support controlled migration, those who support a complete abandonment of all immigration controls, those who want an Australian-style immigration policy and so on.

The apology matrix would be quite complex.
For "to entertain UK" read "to enter the UK"

(ipad autocorrect not doing it's job properly).

Just a typing error nothing more, should have read 1st January 2007, see link.

Okay - but what has the minimum wage got to do with the subject, which I assume is still cashpoint fraud?

Sorry you can't keep up, in debates certain other matters are introduced from time to time, which although they may well be of a different nature they can be loosely associated to the main item under discussion.

I am sure you have done the same from time to time, in fact it is a common practice by some ABers to deliberately 'side-track' a debate, especially when they want to sweep under the carpet, matters of a sensitive nature.

I do not however resort to such practices neither do I suspect do you, or at least I hope not.

Only partial read my question, the subject is actually about the disadvantages of multi immigration, and Rumanian and Bulgarian are topical at the moment due to certain restrictions being lifted on the 1st January 2014, and those figures were taken from this article.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2268952/Thousands-Bulgarians-Romanians-plan-flood-UK-2014-employment-restrictions-relax.html
Okay - thanks.

I'm afraid my only contact with Romanians have been through work, and as a whole I found them engaging, friendly and professional. I

I think the best way to thwart ATM fraud is to follow the advice of a bloke I used to work with - treat cash machines like you're actually in a bank, talking with a cashier.

If you were in your local bank branch, at a window, and someone was stood right behind you, you would think it strange.

The same should go for cash machines.

One bank has cleverly painted white boxes on the pavement where their cash machines are installed.

The brilliant thing about that is it forms a psychological barrier.

By the way - your question was specifically about ATM fraud by Romanian gangs. As you say - others on AB get sidetracked into other issues, so I agree - the minimum wage in these countries are irrelevant to the issue you've raised which is specifically about cashpoint fraud.
But looking back through this thread, I can see where you're coming from and the point you're trying to make.

Like when I post something about UKIP or the Daily Mail, I'm not really looking for an answer to a particular question - merely raising awareness of a news story.

That fits in with the 'sarcastic dig' reference you made earlier and why this particular debate is destined to end up in a conversational cul-de-sac.

So, with that in mind...

I say that my knowledge of Romanians doesn't lead me to believe that they can be characterised as scroungers and thieves.

Others think differently.

I'll leave it at that.
