My Husband has lots of stanley tools and they seem to fine for the general work he does round the house. I think that they do a range of differant qualities though.

Stanley has been making quality tools for many years, but there are other makers who would be worth considering. My advice is to buy the best quality you can afford and look after them very carefully. They should last for several lifetimes. ( no exageration).

Buy cheap and you buy twice !

Yas, stanley are reasonable quality.

Avoid cheap forign imports from shops, they are not just poor quality they can be positivly leathel, even if they look identical to the real Mcoy..

With hand tools you wont go far wrong with Stanley or any major brand, their name is their reputation. They are more expensive but will last forever. Look after your kit and itll look after you!

Some of the DIY shops own brand are OK for normal DIY use but you really do get what you pay for.

As Logman says just avoid market stalls/pound shops and the like for tools - its false economy.
I suppose I should be promoting Stanley tools, yes they are good but there are other makes equally good. B&Q own brand are ok and have a very good selection at reasonable prices. I have quite a mix myself which I've had for many years. You can spend a fortune but it isn't necessary for DIY just so long as you don't buy the really cheap stuff as has been mentioned.
