Is there an alternative service planned with the functions of Sky+? I simply can't bring myself to pay extra monthly for a service that is built into the box (i.e. the recording).

its a bit of a hassle but if youve got a friend whos a computer nerd you can set up a hard drive with the correct software to perform the same functions as sky plus....
if you are on the full package there is no extra charge

You can get a Freeview box with an 80GB hard drive for around 169 or a dual one for around 229.

Obviously, you don't get the Sky packages with that but they're one off payments.

I'd get the dual if I was you. Allows you to record a programme while watching another, thing the cheaper one doesn't allow you to do.

I have a Tivo system which is really good. I bought mine a round 5-6 years ago when they first came out and paid for the lifetime pass.

You can still get these secondhand on ebay or via your local papers
