I heard a piece of music the other day and i need to know what it is. It's an orchestral piece, with what sounds like either humming or russian vocals over the top. This is very vague I know but if someone can help I'd be greatly appreciative!

Sounds like it could be Prokofiev to me - maybe Lieutenant Kije if its the piece I am thinking about (but I have lost my copy so can't verify this)

Hmmm... that's not it ( but thanks anyway ). The one I have in mind is more sombre and mostly vocal (at least humming, sorry if I was misleading when i said it was an orchestral piece!).
Not exactly Russian I know, but what about the 'Humming Chorus' from Puccini's Madam Butterfly?

Or....would it be anything like Rachmaninoff's 'All Night Vigil' (Vespers). This would be Eastern Orthodox-type music, in the same vein as the Gregorian Chants - or the slow, sombre choral music beloved by John Tavener.

Possible Vangelis - Conquest of paradise, this sounds very classical and has the Russian humming theme throughout

Give that man a biscuit! That's the one... Thanks Mortartube!
Only too happy to help. I know how infuriating it can be to like a piece of music and not be able to find out what it's called. Happy listening.
BTW it's in the film 1492 a conquest of paradise about Colombus discovering America. Worth a watch if you've not seen it
