I've decided to buy a new one. So do I go desk top or lap top. Any advice would be most appreciated. Also which to buy. If I choose lap top is there anyone to advice how to go wireless. I did say I am not tech savvy.

That's correct Jeza, but a dongle is slow than wifi and you buy them from a mobile phone company. Either pay as you go or contract, just like a phone.
Jeza, think VERY carefully before buying a dongle. There are so many BT hotspots now that you really do need to be in the middle of nowhere not to find one. The advice to check with the hospital first is good. Chances are that they will have free Wi-Fi for in-patients and visitors. If that is the case, then some sort of tablet would be suitable, but you will still need to think about what you actually need the machine for.
It's an alternative ti wi-fi Jeza. With a dongle you could "use it on the bus" but yes it may be slower

I have now established that the hospital has free wifi. Is this across all providers, the web site does not say. I did say I'm a thicky.
Presuming you are MidYorks then that is brilliant news

" To access it connect to 'my-guest' and ask a member of staff for the current username and password, which changes monthly."
If not, simply ask on ward.

Many thanks Mamya. ♥
Love to you both ♥
So with free wifi you could use a tablet/ipad or a laptop. But a tablet/ ipad would be more portable. Maybe you could leave it with Mic on days when he feels up to using it?
